A driver was taken to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries early Wednesday after a vehicle struck a venting pipe and a utility box at Hillside Avenue and Government Street.

Victoria police officers patrolling the downtown area came across the aftermath of the single-vehicle crash about 1 a.m.

Officers are continuing to investigate. Speed is believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said in a statement.

Both the vehicle and parts of the road infrastructure sustained “considerable damage,” police said.

City public-works staff were called in to help with the clean up of the roadway.

The 2600-block of Government Street was closed for several hours while traffic analysts and and officers examined the scene.

The site was reopened about 7 a.m.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam footage and has yet to speak with officers to contact them at 250-995-7654, extension 1.
