Daily Anacortes ferries resume
This year’s tourist season kicks off Sunday, when Washington State Ferries resumes daily service between Sidney and Anacortes. The MV Chelan leaves Anacortes at 8:30 a.m., arriving at Friday Harbour at 9:55 a.m., and pulling into Sidney at 11:10 a.m. Celebrations with town criers are planned as part of the event. The ferry leaves Sidney for Friday Harbour and then arrives at Anacortes at 3 p.m.
Brewpub teams with baseball
Spinnakers Gastro Brewpub will provide the official beer for the HarbourCats’ first season in the West Coast baseball league. Select Spinnakers beers will be available at the team’s 28 home games at Royal Athletic Park. The season begins June 5. Beer prices will be reduced by $1 on June 12, July 19, and July 31 for what’s called Winning Wednesdays.
Butchart a Top 10 garden
Butchart Gardens has won another accolade: It has been added to the list of top 10 North American gardens worth travelling for at the Garden Tourism Awards in Toronto. The Canadian Garden Tourism Council also handed out hardware to Butchart Gardens general manager Dave Cowen, who was named Person of the Year for his work for the B.C. Garden Tourism Society and Butchart Gardens.
Shipbuilding symposium
A symposium is being held April 4 in Vancouver for small and medium-sized businesses eager to take advantage of opportunities flowing from the national shipbuilding procurement strategy. Seaspan Marine, owner of Vancouver Shipyards and Victoria Shipyards in Esquimalt, earlier won the right to negotiate $8 billion worth of federal shipbuilding contracts. Lecture on future of food
Dr. Vandana Shiva wll explore the future of food in a President’s Distinguished Lecture at the University of Victoria March 27 at the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium. Tickets are fully reserved, but a waitlist will be taken at the UVic ticket centre beginning at 6 p.m. on the evening of the lecture.
