More single-family homes are being built in the capital region this year than last, according to figures released Thursday by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
Builders in Greater Victoria have started 162 single-family homes, up from 127 started through the first quarter of 2013.
However, the total number of starts is down compared to last year as multiple-unit projects have fallen off. Through the first four months of last year, there were 400 units started, compared to the 251 so far in 2014.

Tourism body vies for prize
Tourism Victoria is a finalist for the marketer of the year award from the B.C. chapter of the American Marketing Association.
Tourism Victoria was nominated for the award, which recognizes an outstanding marketing strategy over a sustained period rather than a specific campaign, by other marketing outfits.

Flood projects get $2.7 million
Taxpayers are spending $27 million on flood-mitigation projects in 26 communities in B.C. The money is coming through the federal and provincial governments. Vancouver Island communities receiving support include Langford, receiving $732,266 toward Willing Park stormwater detention pond construction. Port Alberni will receive $1.8 million toward Dry Creek improvements, and the District of North Cowichan has been granted $4.46 million to help pay for a dikes and pump station project. The Cowichan Valley Regional District is getting $2.7 million for dike construction in the Koksilah industrial area.
