A volunteer firefighter who happened to be driving by jumped into a creek near Port Alberni on Monday after a vehicle went over an embankment and landed in waist-deep water when the driver had a medical incident.

Port Alberni RCMP responded about 5:30 p.m to the incident at Roger Creek and found the Port Alberni Fire Department had already arrived and was tending to the driver.

Police said three youths who were passengers in the vehicle managed to get out before it reached the creek.

There were surprisingly no serious injuries, police said, and all of the vehicle’s occupants were treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital for assessment.

“The selfless acts that were displayed by those who stopped to help show what our small town is about,” said Const. Richard Johns.

Police contacted the Ministry of Environment, and said it appears that no fluids from the vehicle went into the creek.
