VANCOUVER — Firefighters battled a blaze that erupted Thursday morning on an 18-metre party boat docked at a Vancouver marina.
No one was on the boat when the fire broke out shortly before 7 a.m near the Westin Bayshore hotel in Coal Harbour, said Vancouver Fire and Rescue public information officer Capt. Jonathan Gormick.
Huge plumes of acrid smoke filled the air, and there was significant damage done to the vessel, he said. Firefighters had to wait for the smoke to clear before entering the boat.
At this time, investigators do not know how the fire started, or whether it is considered suspicious.
Firefighters kept the fire under control, said Gormick, adding that it did not spread to any other boats or to the dock.
Vancouver Fire and Rescue did not disclose the company that owns the party cruise boat, but said the owner had been contacted.
