B.C. Ferries sailings out of Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen will be about an hour behind schedule Saturday, after a medical emergency on board forced the 11 a.m. departure from Victoria to return to the dock.
A passenger on board the Spirit of Vancouver Island experienced a medical emergency, causing crew to turn around about 15 minutes into the journey to Vancouver. An ambulance met the ferry at Swartz Bay and transported the passenger to hospital.
The ship is now about 65 minutes behind schedule and will likely continue to run about an hour behind scheduled sailing times for the remainder of the day, said Deborah Marshall, executive director of public affairs for B.C. Ferries.
Marshall said there are no cancellations on the route, and crew will try to make up time over the course of the day.
The ferries are at peak capacity this long weekend, with some passengers without reservations experiencing sailing waits, Marshall said. Hourly departures out of Swartz Bay and Tsawwassen are scheduled until 9 p.m. Saturday. The final sailing will likely leave around 10 p.m. with the delay, Marshall said.
