B.C.’s police watchdog is clarifying a Victoria police officer’s connection to a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway that left a motorcyclist dead.

The Independent Investigations Office initially said Monday the crash at 2:15 a.m. Sunday near Cobble Hill Road involved several vehicles, including a Corvette, a green Kawasaki motorcycle and a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.

In an updated statement Tuesday, the office said the police officer “came upon a debris field located in the roadway and was neither the driver nor the rider in the initial crash.”

The IIO investigates police-involved injuries or deaths.

The office has not said how the officer’s actions are connected with the motorcyclist’s death.

It said RCMP are conducting a concurrent investigation into alleged motor vehicle offences by the other drivers involved in the crash.

South Vancouver Island Traffic services is looking for a vehicle that drove through the debris, as investigators believe the driver could have information crucial to the investigation.

No description of the vehicle was provided.

That vehicle was not connected to the off-duty officer.

The IIO asks any potential witnesses to call its office at 1-855-446-8477.

Anyone who might have driven through the debris or has direct knowledge of a driver who did is asked to call South Vancouver Island Traffic services at 250-416-0352.
