A water-main break has flooded roads in the Royal Oak area.

No one was hurt when a fire broke out on a B.C. Transit bus that was “deadheading” — driving between locations with no passengers on board — on Friday afternoon.

A motorist managed to get the bus driver’s attention after spotting smoke coming from the vehicle’s rear end as it travelled on the Trans-Canada Highway just east of the Millstream turnoff near Thetis Lake.

The bus driver pulled over and got out, then was picked up by another bus that was in the area.

Langford firefighters responded and had the fire extinguished by about 2:10 p.m. Two westbound lanes of the highway were closed briefly.

B.C. Transit said the fire was in the bus’s engine.

The bus appeared to be a hybrid vehicle.
