The B.C. Coroners Service is investigating the unexpected death of a 49-year-old man found by a passerby deep in the bush in Beacon Hill Park on Saturday morning.

The death of the man, who might have been camping in the park, is not believed to be suspicious, but nothing will be ruled out until the Coroners Service investigates, police said.

The body was found at about 7:15 a.m. Saturday in a section of the park off the 400-block of Douglas Street, which borders and enters the park.

Victoria police initially investigated, and the case was handed over to the Coroners Service, which will determine the cause and classification of the death. The service said Saturday it’s too early to make any conclusions.

The identity of the man will not be released by the Coroners Service until family is notified and interviewed, spokeswoman Barb McLintock said. The earliest this could happen is Monday.

The body was removed from the park by the coroner.

By 11 a.m., the police tape was down and there was no sign of the grim early morning discovery.
