A house in the 200 block of Homer Road in Saanich sustained about $350,000 in damage in a fire this morning.
Saanich firefighters were called to the scene at about 10:30 a.m. to find smoke coming out of the roof vents of the two-level home, Capt. Rob Paton said.
No one was at home at the time.
“After conducting a 360 of the house, it was quickly determined that the fire originated in the basement,” a Saanich Fire Department release said.
“With the entire house full of smoke, a ventilation procedure was conducted that allowed firefighters to enter the dwelling and locate the seat of the fire promptly.”
Smoke damage was extensive.
The initial response was 14 firefighters, two fire engines, one ladder truck and one rescue truck. Saanich Police, B.C. Hydro and B.C. Ambulance Service also turned out.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is under investigation by the Saanich Fire Department Prevention Division.
