A vacant cabin was destroyed by fire at the Malahat Ocean View Motel, while an adjacent vacant cabin suffered smoke and water damage.
“When I got there the residents were trying to tackle it with a garden hose,” said Gerry Lacquement of the Malahat Volunteer Fire Department. The fire was reported about 11:45 a.m. on Monday.
He said no one was hurt and the cause has yet to be determined. It was a significant blaze, and the Malahat department was joined by units from Shawnigan Lake and Mill Bay.
“We managed to knock down the fire and contain it to one unit,” Lacquement said.
The dwellings were being used for long-term rentals.
