Former councillor Cliff McNeil-Smith to run for mayor in Sidney

Former Sidney councillor Cliff McNeil-Smith is taking another run at becoming mayor of Sidney. McNeil-Smith, owner of Tanner’s Books for 17 years, announced his intention to run for mayor Wednesday.

Former Sidney councillor Cliff McNeil-Smith is taking another run at becoming mayor of Sidney.

McNeil-Smith, owner of Tanner’s Books for 17 years, announced his intention to run for mayor Wednesday.

He placed second in the balloting for mayor in 2014 with 1,180 votes compared with then Coun. Steve Price, who won the contest with 1,312 votes.

“As mayor, I will listen to the community and lead council to communicate effectively with residents, neighbourhoods, our many unique community organizations, and local businesses that collectively employ thousands,” McNeil-Smith said in a statement.

Price has said he plans to stand for re-election.

McNeil-Smith said he gained valuable experience during his term as a Sidney councillor and on the boards of seven local community organizations, including the Memorial Park Society (Mary Winspear Centre/Blue Heron Park).

He was the founding president and board chair of the Sidney Business Improvement Society and a founding director of the Shaw Centre for the Salish Sea.

McNeil-Smith, served a three year term on council after being elected in 2008.
