A WestJet plane en route from Vancouver made an emergency landing in Nanaimo on Tuesday afternoon.
Smoke appeared in the cabin and on the flight deck as the passenger aircraft approached Nanaimo Airport, its destination. Fifty-six passengers were on board at the time.
Emergency services were called in.
“Upon landing, guests were safely evacuated from the aircraft into the terminal to await their carry-on and luggage,” WestJet said in a statement.
“We appreciate and recognize that this would be [an] unsettling experience for all involved and we apologize to our guests for this.”
Three subsequent flights were cancelled.
A maintenance inspection was performed on the affected Bombardier Q400.
We had to Emergency Evacuate our flight today... had some smoke fill the cabin 5 minuets before landing... Everyone is Safe and West Jet did a amazing job at getting us off fast and orderly... #westjet #Nanaimo pic.twitter.com/pxTqYXPfLY
