Sidney-North Saanich RCMP have identified an elderly man found dead on a Sidney-area beach early Sunday morning and handed the case over to the B.C. Coroners Service.
No information was released about the man’s identity.
About 7 a.m. on Sunday, a passerby called B.C. Ambulance about a recently deceased man found on the public-access beach at the foot of Amherst Avenue.
The man, wearing slacks, collared shirt and a V-neck cardigan, was wet and lying on the shore. The tide was out.
Cpl. Chris Manseau said the man, believed to be in his 80s, had no wallet or identification.
Police don’t suspect foul play in the man’s death, said Manseau.
RCMP officers canvassed the area on Sunday, notifying neighbours, nursing homes and health-care facilities in an attempt to identify the man.
Meanwhile, police continue to try to retrace the final steps of a 79-year-old man found seriously injured on Lochside Drive about 4 a.m. on Aug. 9. He later died in hospital.
The man, who was living with his wife, was last seen at about 11 p.m., in the area of a corner store at Malaview Avenue and Resthaven Drive.
Police believe the man died from head injuries suffered in a fall. They said he appeared to have been wandering around Sidney and North Saanich and became disoriented.
