Shawnigan Lake School has announced a former graduate will finance a new girls’ residence for the boarding school.
Jim Shaw — who graduated from Shawnigan Lake School in 1977 and is vice-chairman and past CEO of Shaw Communications — and his wife Kathryn Elizabeth Shaw are giving the gift of the new house.
The residence is being named Elizabeth House, after Kathryn Elizabeth Shaw, who is a member of Shawnigan Lake School’s board of governors and chairwoman of the advancement and alumni relations committee.
The school will now have 10 boarding houses. As the fifth girls’ residence, Elizabeth House “will allow the school to continue proudly on its path to full gender balance in every way,” says a statement from the school.
Shawnigan Lake School celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016.
“We stand proudly at the dawn of our second century and this wonderful gift enables us to make another huge step on our journey to be perfectly in tune with the equitable society that we all subscribe to,” said headmaster David Robertson.
