Re: “Soccer player gets the boot,” Oct. 30.
I am a member of the soccer community in Victoria, and I understand the position of the Comox Valley club. Faced with the prospect of losing a big sponsor, which provides much-needed funds to support hundreds of kids’ dreams of playing at a high competitive level, they had to toughen their position and enforce something that all players sign when they join the league and the club: a code of conduct.
I am a father, I have a daughter and I have always taught her to stand for what she believes in. And I understand the young woman did exactly that. But I also have taught my daughter that she can’t impose her point of view on others.
She has to respect other’s views, so they can respect hers. Our liberties are based on the principle that you can do things as long as they do not infringe on the rights of others.
It’s a shame that the situation ended the way it did, but the player and her family made a decision and they are facing the consequences. Let’s not blame anyone, but use this as a teaching moment for all: Life is full of choices and the results have to be accepted as they come.
