Victoria’s spelling champ Laura Weir, 14, is a featured finalist in a special broadcast of Postmedia Canspell’s National Spelling Bee on Spelling Night in Canada Monday on CBC.

The six-hour competition took place in front of a 140-member audience at the CBC Television building in Toronto last Sunday.

Twenty-one finalists from across Canada arrived in Toronto last week to prepare for the national competition.

While readers might know the results of the spelling bee, the program will show the skill and sportsmanship of all the finals.

Spelling Night in Canada is hosted by Jim Hughson of Hockey Night in Canada. The broadcast features cameos by Rick Mercer, George Stroumboulopoulos and a duo from Coach’s Corner.

Canspell was launched in 2005 by Postmedia Network (formerly Canwest) as a way to encourage children to have a love for words and reading. The competition is sponsored by Postmedia, the Egg Farmers of Canada, CBC and the Sheraton Centre Toronto.

The finalists were all regional spelling champions from across the country. They ranged from Grade 5 to 8 students and had already beat out 250,000 other spellers to make it to Toronto.
