Are you associated with or running as part of a slate? If so, which one?
No Slate
Do you live in the municipality where you are running, and if so, for how long? If not, what is your connection to that community?
I was born in the old Nanaimo hospital but raised in Coombs and have lived in Nanaimo continuously since May 1, 1979.
Was called to the bar as a lawyer July 10, 1980, and served a total of 18 years as MLA
What is your occupation, and for how long?
Lawyer and MLA
Tell us about your previous elected and/or community experience.
I represented the Parksville-Qualicum Riding from 1991-1996 and the Nanaimo Riding as MLA from 2005 to 2018, when I resigned the seat after being elected Mayor in the 2018 municipal election.
Why are you running? What’s your motivation?
I have the desire and the experience to continue to bring good governance to the City and to work to continue its impressive record of growth, and to continue to be one of the leaders of BC municipalities which are pressing senior governments to bring forward new solutions to the problems of addiction and mental health.
What are your top three issues?
I want to see real progress from senior governments on dealing with Addictions/Mental Health issues that are affecting residents’ confidence about public safety; Improving Municipal services to ensure that investors get the quickest possible responses to development plans; Working with other government agencies that are important to the City’s growth and welfare (eg Port, Airport, VIHA, VIU to help ensure their continued growth and success)
What’s your vision for your community in 25 years?
Nanaimo will be the hub of a vibrant and desirable mid-Island area, with faster and better transportation links, to encourage and serve the businesses that wish to locate and grow here.
What’s one “big idea” you have for your community?
The most important “idea” is to understand and prepare for tomorrow. Technology, Climate change, Demographics all demand that communities respond to these and other changes in a positive way that welcome innovation.
