Tamara Ballard - Metchosin council candidate 2022

Tamara Ballard

Are you associated with or running as part of a slate? If so, which one?

No.

Do you live in the municipality where you are running, and if so, for how long? If not, what is your connection to that community?

Yes, for six years.

What is your occupation, and for how long?

I have been managing our family business. Est 2020.

Tell us about your previous elected and/or community experience.

I have been actively attending council and committee meetings for the past two years. I am new to the local government. I am fully invested in maintaining the well-being and interest of Metchosin residents. I enjoy talking with my neighbors and fellow Metchosin residents regarding what we appreciate about this beautiful rural community. As well as topics and issues that have concerned us.

Why are you running? What’s your motivation?

I am running for council because I love Metchosin! I moved here because Metchosin has values and goals that I share. The Community stands up to protect our rural nature, to keep our taxes affordable. I strongly encourage all community members to attend council and committee meetings. If not, in person by live streaming. To know firsthand what is happening. I had an experience that opened my eyes to how important local government is. I want to be part of that.

What are your top three issues?

Keeping taxes affordable is the top priority in maintaining rural status. Agricultural and food security is vital. Without farming, Metchosin will become just another urban sprawl, which no resident wants. Bylaw education and enforcement are also top issues.

What’s your vision for your community in 25 years?

My vision for Metchosin in 25 years is that we are still a rural, thriving farming community. With a bustling village square with a mix of businesses, activities, and community members. We as a community maintain affordable taxes to continue to live, work, and enjoy being here. To support each other as good neighbors and friends. To continue to be a healthy, productive, environmentally friendly community.

What’s one “big idea” you have for your community?

My idea would be to spend the Parks and Trails budget on a safe passage for Hans Helgesen Elementary School. The children and parents need a safe roadside passage to safely walk and bike to and from school along Rocky Point Rd. I believe it would be money well spent investing in the future of the community’s children. If elected, I would bring this recommendation to my fellow council members in hopes of moving forward with the proposal.
