Gothic Revival architecture — inspired by the great cathedrals of Europe — spawned a number of variants, such as Collegiate Gothic, Prairie Gothic, Castle Gothic, Steamboat Gothic and Carpenter Gothic. The last variant, which includes elements such as ornate trims and cathedral-style windows, peaks and gables, had the most impact locally.

Over the years, changing tastes, with new trends such as arts and crafts and art deco, captured the fancy of Victorians. But did some part of Gothic Revival survive and endure?

Nick Russell, a Victoria heritage researcher, lecturer and writer, will show how Carpenter Gothic design elements still influence architects in Victoria today.

Admission is $15.

The lecture runs 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Wentworth Villa Architectural Museum, 1156 Fort St. For details, go to wentworthvilla.com.
