It started out as a fight with an ex-girlfriend and ended up a fight with a police officer.

In between, a 22-year-old Kamloops man caused much mayhem just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, Kamloops RCMP said.

Police allege that he had been partying with friends at a home in the 900 block of Gleneagles Drive when got into a "physical altercation" with his former girlfriend.

He sped off in his 2011 Dodge D-150 pickup truck, crashed into two parked vehicles and rolled his truck onto its roof about a block and a half away.

"The driver then allegedly called police to report the vehicle as being stolen prior to walking back to the party and disclosing to his friends that he had crashed his vehicle," Staff Sgt. Grant Learned said.

Officers investigating the reported theft talked to witnesses and went to arrest the man for public mischief.

"He tried to fight with the officer and was pepper sprayed before he fled from the area on foot," Learned said.

A police patrol and service dog caught him soon after and arrested him without further incident. He was released on a promise to appear in court on Dec. 12.

The pickup and a 2013 Kia Soul were wrecked beyond repair while a 2001 Chev Silverado pickup sustained less damage.

"Alcohol was an underlying factor in this incident," Learned said.
