Man accused of 'barbecuing' meth on his apartment balcony

A man suspected of cooking methamphetamine on a barbecue on his apartment deck in Abbotsford has been arrested.

A man suspected of cooking methamphetamine on a barbecue on his apartment deck in Abbotsford has been arrested.

Neighbours in an apartment complex in the 2200-block McKenzie Road alerted police after the man began yelling while out on his balcony late Saturday, said Const. Ian MacDonald of the Abbotsford Police.

“We are still trying to piece everything together,” MacDonald said Sunday. “We got the call that this guy was screaming at others in the complex.

”When you are cooking meth on your barbecue and yelling at your neighbours, maybe he was sampling his product,” MacDonald said.

“This was a person who was low on the police radar and certainly he outed himself [by] the way he behaved,” added MacDonald.

The suspect was decontaminated and then taken to jail. Police are in the process of dismantling the suspected meth lab.

The big concern MacDonald cited is the risk in running a makeshift chemical lab on the patio of a busy apartment complex. “It is obviously a recipe for disaster,” he said.

The 32-year-old man remains in police custody and faces charges of production of a controlled substance.
