WEST VANCOUVER — Police allege that the driver from Nanaimo who caused a three-vehicle crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near West Vancouver that sent a toddler to hospital Wednesday night was impaired.

Shortly after 7 p.m., police received multiple 911 calls reporting a white van driving travelling the wrong way in the westbound lanes of Highway 1. The van crashed into two other vehicles west of the Capilano River Bridge.

A family of four from Vancouver in a westbound minivan, including a two-year-old girl and the single occupant of a second westbound vehicle were taken to hospital. The driver of the white van was also taken to hospital for treatment of leg and hip fractures.

Investigators say the toddler in the minivan required surgery for a shoulder fracture. Her seven-year-old sister and parents were not physically injured. The driver and sole occupant of the third vehicle, a Burnaby man, was treated and released..

Investigators said they will recommend charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving.
