Part of Highway 97 North near Prince George was closed Sunday following a single-vehicle crash that killed the driver of a pickup truck.

According to an RCMP release, the crash occurred around 3 p.m. when the driver of a 2006 Ford F30 pickup travelling at “a very high rate of speed” lost control and went off the highway into trees. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

He did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash but say speed was a contributing factor and alcohol might also have played a role.

The north side of the highway remained closed Sunday night so police could collect and document physical evidence.

Police are looking for witnesses to the crash, particularly the occupants of a silver Toyota Tundra pickup truck that might have been in the area at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Prince George Regional Traffic Services at 250-649-4004.
