VANCOUVER — The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been called in to investigate a death on Salt Spring Island after a man who was found unresponsive by police later died.

Salt Spring RCMP said Friday evening that police were called to a fight on Richard Flack Road at 4:20 a.m. Officers found a 36-year-old man receiving CPR from two men, one of whom had non-life-threatening injuries.

Salt Spring RCMP continued CPR efforts until paramedics arrived. The unresponsive man was taken to the island’s hospital by ambulance, but died shortly after arrival.

The Independent Investigations Office investigates after such cases to see if any actions or inaction by police played a role in a death.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is investigating the incident. No charges have been laid.
