NANAIMO — The Snuneymuxw First Nation is holding talks with B.C. Hydro concerning damage done to an ancient petroglyph in Cedar.

The discussion could include financial compensation and education about First Nation artifacts, says Snuneymuxw Coun. William Yoachim.

Work crews hired by the Crown corporation scraped a centuries-old sandstone carving with heavy machinery in late April. It was the second time the artifact has been damaged by B.C. Hydro.

The Snuneymuxw have called the damage a “tragedy” that has affected the entire community.

B.C. Hydro said the accident was caused by human error and is something they “deeply regret.”
