Ground is being broken Wednesday for a new extended-stay hotel on Victoria International Airport lands.

Construction of the three-storey, 129-room hotel is scheduled to begin this fall and be finished by late next year.

Developer Kothari Group, based in Ontario, is leasing the 3.5 acres of commercially zoned land at the corner of the Patricia Bay Highway and Beacon Avenue West from the Victoria Airport Authority.

The TownePlace Suites Hotel will be part of the Marriott International brand.

Paul Nursey, chief executive of Destination Greater Victoria, said he expects the hotel will be particularly attractive to people booked on early-morning flights.

“A lot of our flights out of Victoria leave early in the morning and this will provide [travellers] with comfortable experiences.”

Plans for the hotel call for meeting areas, full kitchens, barbecues equipped with tools and spices, a laundry, swimming pool, fitness centre, restaurant and a convenience store.

The hotel will have studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom suites.

It will likely attract a mix of customers, from families to professionals, Nursey said.

The Victoria International Airport handled a total of 204,466 passengers in August, the highest monthly level so far this year, according to airport statistics. The majority, 188,756, were domestic travellers.

Last year, the airport carried 1.7 million passengers. This year, the airport had handled 1.2 million passengers by the end of August.

Kothari Group reworked the hotel’s design after meeting with Sidney council in 2022.

The new look was created to better reflect the building’s relationship to its surroundings and its presence on the high-profile property, the airport authority said earlier.
