Murray and Lynda Farmer will be toasted this spring by the business community as the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce recognizes the couple with a lifetime achievement award.

Citing their lifetime commitment to the community, the chamber noted the Farmers have helped build the city well beyond its bricks and mortar.

“Murray and Lynda are very deserving of this recognition. Their business and philanthropic endeavours have had a profound impact on our community,” said Al Hasham, chairman of the chamber. “The Farmers have had a role in building a lasting legacy here. To provide educational opportunities creates a sustainable foundation for growth.”

Murray Farmer, who last fall was named the honorary colonel of the Canadian Scottish Regiment (Princess Mary’s), is the past chairman of both the Canadian and Vancouver Island Construction Associations.

The couple have worked tirelessly to raise funds for post-secondary learning, each having held key board positions during pivotal times in the history of the University of Victoria and Camosun College.

They were also co-chairs of a community-based campaign that funded the establishment of the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre.

“Working together to support post-secondary education and our local business community is something Lynda and I both enjoy and are committed to in our daily lives,” said Murray Farmer. “We feel very honoured to be recognized by the chamber.”

The Farmers will be honoured at the Greater Victoria Business Awards April 21 at the Empress Hotel. It marks the 15th year of the awards, which recognize excellence in

13 categories, including lifetime achievement. “Finalists represent a group of businesses that have demonstrated an ability to go above and beyond in order to make their business successful and also contribute to the vitality of our community,” said CEO Bruce Carter.
