Nanaimo Airport will soon start expanding its northern apron to reduce congestion and provide a safe and durable surface for aircraft.
The $351,215 construction project will be completed within months, an airport statement said on Wednesday.
Funds are coming from B.C.’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. The B.C. Air Access Program provides capital cost-sharing money to airport infrastructure projects.
Recent projections estimate that 450,000 passengers will use the Nanaimo airport each year by 2020.
The announcement follows one this month that the Nanaimo Airport will receiving $7.46 million from three levels of government to complete the first phase of its terminal building expansion project. The departure lounge and passenger-security areas will be extended at Nanaimo Airport.
Trampoline park to open in May
The Flying Squirrel trampoline park in Esquimalt is aiming to open in May, according to its Facebook page.
The company is seeking assistant managers for the 808 Viewfield Rd. facility, where saws are whirring as construction workers prepare the site.
An extra-large pink squirrel logo has been installed on the exterior of the building and green and pink posts are standing inside.
Last year, a company spokesman said the facility would include more than 13,000 square feet of trampolines and have 50 to 60 staff. Its website said it will include dodge ball courts, rope swings, foam pits, a rock wall, and a laser maze.
Flying Squirrel has parks open in Calgary and in Hamilton, Ont. It looks set for a major expansion, stating on its website that it is planning to open in Victoria, Winnipeg and Ottawa early this year. Another seven parks are expected to open this year in Abbotsford, south Calgary, and in Ontario in Scarborough, Whitby, Kingston, Waterloo, and Niagara Falls.

Valhalla Pure Outfitters in Langford’s Millstream Village is closing. Richard Harley said in a statement Wednesday the company’s 10-year lease has expired and it will not be extended. He said a close-out sale will continue through April and May. Valhalla Pure’s Courtenay location at 29th Street and Cliffe Avenue, remains open. Harley said Valhalla Pure thanks all customers who have been supporting the business since it opened on Broughton Street in Victoria in 1991 ... JA Auctioneering of Parksville has acquired the vehicle-auction division of Jefferson’s Auctioneering Sales Ltd., also of Parksville. Island vehicle dealerships and companies provide vehicles for JA’s weekly public automobile auction. Guy Henry and Stuart Kuiken, co-owners of JA Auctioneering, are aiming to increase the number of suppliers to the auction.
