Michael Prince of the University of Victoria has been named Academic of the Year by the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of B.C. Prince, inaugural Lansdowne Professor of Social Policy in the Faculty of Human and Social Development, volunteers with Inclusion B.C. (formerly the B.C. Association for Community Living) and the Council of Canadians with Disabilities.
His book, Absent Citizens: Disability Politics and Policy in Canada examines how disability exists on the periphery of public awareness. His areas of expertise include federal-provincial relations, social discrimination, seniors’ benefits, income security, poverty and housing.

Port Angeles shop caters to Islanders
Port Angeles Package Receiving, which accepts parcels for Vancouver Island residents, has a new storefront office in that community at 127 E. First St. The office is two blocks from the MV Coho ferry dock. People can leave Victoria on the Coho as walk-on passengers, collect their parcels and be back within four hours at a total cost of about $30.

Willows Beach tea room opens
The Kiwanis Willows Beach Tea Room opens at 9 a.m. today for its summer season. The outlet typically raises about $45,000 in its five-month summer season. The money goes to charitable and service activities of the Oak Bay Kiwanis Club across the capital region. During its past winter season, when breakfasts were served on Sundays, the club raised almost $7,000. Those funds will go to the 122-bed Kiwanis Pavilion on Cedar Hill Road, which specializes in dementia care. The facility is owned and operated by Oak Bay Kiwanis.

Appointments
The Victoria Conservatory of Music has a new chairman in former MP Roy Cullen, who replaces Ed Chwyl. Carolyn Thoms of Paragon Private Wealth, will step into the role of treasurer that Cullen vacates. New directors on the conservatory board are Ray Moore and Barbara Smith.
