Victoria-based ShipCon-structor Software Inc. will provide the software to help design billions of dollars worth of federal ships to be built in Vancouver and Esquimalt. The technology firm, with its head office at 3960 Quadra St., produces software for detailed plans to build ships and marine structures. Seaspan Marine Corp., owner of Victoria Shipyards and Vancouver Shipyards, will be using the company's CAD/CAM software on the vessels.

Last year, Seaspan won the right to negotiate to build $8 billion worth of noncombat ships on the West Coast. Vessels include the Canadian Coast Guard polar icebreaker John G. Diefenbaker. At least seven vessels will be built by Seaspan, creating an anticipated 4,000 jobs. Ship-Constructor can provide experienced staff to suit the shipyard's short timeline, the company said. It also has the added advantage of being based on AutoCAD, so if new users have industry knowledge and basic AutoCAD skills, they can be trained "in only a few weeks."
