Greater Victoria’s hot real estate market continues to power forward with 539 property sales in the first month of this year.

That number of sales is up from 465 in December and also beat January of last year, which had 351 sales.

The number of properties for sale has dropped year-over-year as the capital region market keeps on sizzling from 2015.

“Though the ongoing count of properties for sale is low, the number of new listings entering the market is close to what we saw last year,” Wendy Moreton, Victoria Real Estate Board president, said Monday.

She also figures that spring buying fever could be arriving extra-early.

“Last year we saw the traditionally busy spring market start early as sales picked up over February and March,” Moreton said.

“This year the spring market may be starting even earlier, as our sales numbers for January are close to the numbers we saw last February.”

The highest number of single-family sales last month was in Saanich East with 49, followed by Langford at 35, Victoria at 24, and Sooke and Saanich West with 21 each. — Times Colonist
