A community member of Glenlyon-Norfolk school has tested negative for COVID-19.

The private school said on Twitter Saturday that the person was not infected with the virus; it thanked students, parents and staff for their patience and understanding.

The school closed both of its campuses on Tuesday, a few days before the start of spring break, as a precaution while the person awaited test results.

The school was the first on the Island to close due to the novel coronavirus outbreak, which has so far seen 73 people in B.C. test positive for the disease, including a man in his 80s who is, so far, the country’s only death due to the virus.

Public health officials in B.C. have not followed other provinces in calling for school closures.

Many school districts across the province held their last day of classes Friday before a two-week spring break.

The province’s top doctor said they will use the schedule break to review their position on schools.

“We have a period of time where we can be thoughtful. We can investigate the issues around schools,” provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said Thursday.

Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and New Brunswick have all announced school closures as the number of identified cases of COVID-19 grow across the country.
