Another Oscar could soon be residing in B.C. after Vancouverite Bryan Litson was nominated along with others for his visual effects work on Top Gun: Maverick.
The team that worked on Top Gun: Maverick has also been nominated for a slew of Visual Effects Society awards including for outstanding visual effects.
Litson recently became a visual effects supervisor for Framestore Ltd., an international creative studio with offices in Vancouver, but is nominated for work he did while at Moving Picture Company Ltd.
His colleague who is nominated with Litson for VFX work on Top Gun: Maverick, Ryan Tudhope, also joined Framestore late last year as the company’s creative director. Tudhope was previously with Method Inc. (Method Studios), which was recently acquired by Framestore.
“Anyone, and I think that must mean everyone by this point, who’s seen Top Gun: Maverick knows just how thrilling a cinematic spectacle it is,” said Fiona Walkinshaw CEO, film and episodic, at Framestore.
“The forensic attention to detail and absolutely seamless ‘invisible’ FX work played a huge part in this, and they speak to both Ryan’s creative and technical skill and how he led the Method Studios team from pitch to final pixel.”
A trio of VFX supervisors based in Vancouver won Oscars last year for their work on Dune, directed by Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve.
Tristan Myles, Brian Connor and Paul Lambert all walked away with statues for helping VFX house Double Negative Ltd. create photorealistic sci-fi worlds.
