What: Richard Moody Explorations on Jazz Violin Record Release Party
Where: Hermann’s Jazz Club, 753 View St.
When: Friday, Aug. 20, 7 p.m. (doors at 5:30)
Tickets: $25 from hermannsjazz.com (livestream is by donation)
Why: Acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Richard Moody is celebrating the release of his new album, Explorations on Jazz Violin, with an all-star event at Hermann’s Jazz Club on Friday. The record is a notable achievement — with selections ranging from Moody originals to Moonglow, first recorded by Joe Venuti in 1933, and Hoagy Carmichael’s Georgia on My Mind — and the live concert should be equally impressive. The Juno Award nominee (during his time with The Bills) will be alongside Joey Smith (bass), Brent Jarvis (piano), and Kelby MacNayr (drums) for the performance, so fans can confidently expect great things.
THEATRE
What: I’m Batman: 89-97
Where: Metro Studio Theatre (1411 Quadra St.)
When: Thursday, Aug. 19, through Tuesday, Aug. 24
Tickets: $15 from victoriafringe.com
Why: The popular Victoria Fringe Festival is back to offering in-person performances (after an online-only 2020 edition), which is good news for fans of Fringe Festival favourite Rod Peter Jr. The actor-playwright behind The War of 1812 is branching out — way out — with his latest, I’m Batman: 89-97, during which he’ll recreate characters from the four pre-Christopher Nolan Batman films from 1989 to 1997. The second week of the Victoria Fringe gets underway Friday, so a new wave of artists and show means an influx of energy, with Peter Jr.’s anticipated performance leading way.
