Why: The wacky world of Captain Underpants creator Dav Pilkey is the basis for Cat Kid Comic Club, a musical based on Pilkey’s bestselling Dog Man series of graphic novels for kids. A spin-off from Dog Man: The Musical, this Off-Broadway adaptation is centred around the characters Cat Kid and Molly Pollywog, who are joined in the musical with a message by baby frogs who learn how to make their own comics. Where entertainment for kids is concerned, you won’t find much better than this.
EYES OF THE BEAST: CLIMATE DISASTER SURVIVOR STORIES

Why: The documentary-like play Eyes of the Beast: Climate Disaster Survivor Stories, a journalism-theatre hybrid helmed by UVic Theatre alumni Chelsea Haberlin (director/co-writer), with reportage by writing department students in the Climate Disaster Program, winds down its week-long run at The Phoenix Theatre this week with a distinct sense of momentum. The project looks at how community can be created amidst catastrophe, with verbatim theatre as the medium through which the message is conveyed. An added bonus is facilitated talkback sessions at each show, in addition to presentations by everyone from B.C. Green Party leader Sonia Furstenau (Friday) and B.C. Conservative candidate Stephen Andrew (Saturday matinee) to Saanich Mayor Dean Murdoch (Saturday evening). A massive — and monumentally important — undertaking.

Why: The first pops concert of the Victoria Symphony’s 2024-25 season features Melissa Errico, who has been a professional performer for more than 40 years. The Tony Award nominee (and occasional New York Times columnist) will bring her vast experience in the world of music, theatre, television, and film to a set of songs that will be familiar to millions, including ones from The Sound of Music, Les Misérables, My Fair Lady, Phantom of the Opera, and more. Highest recommendation.
