Oak Bay hosts pair of car shows this weekend
It’s a car lover’s weekend ahead with two shows — Jaguars on the Island on Saturday and Oak Bay Collector Car Festival on Sunday — taking place in Oak Bay.
Expect to see more than 100 Big Cats at the Jaguars on the Island event, the largest annual Jaguar show in North America, with the oldest car on the field a 1953 XK Roadster. This year’s featured car is the XJS, with 18 of them in one place.
The E Type will be well represented as well, with 11 expected to show up. There will be a diverse field, with the old marque represented by a diverse assortment of vehicles over different eras, including modern offerings, such as the F-Pace.
What is missing this year is John Hillman, a long-time Jaguar fan who was recognized by the Jaguar Car Club as an honorary judge in 2022. The 103-year-old, who died this year, had selected a 1950 MK V, named Elizabeth, for the Best in Show award that year.
A food truck will be on site 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Jaguars on the Island show is free. The show is open to the public 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 20 at Windsor Park, 2451 Windsor Rd.
This is the 24th year of the Oak Bay Collector Car Festival, which usually attracts more than 300 unique vehicles, onSunday.
This is the first festival since the death of its founder, Ken Agate, in September. His beloved 1938 Dodge Deluxe Touring Sedan will be parked at Oak Bay Municipal Hall in his memory.
As in previous years, vehicles will be placed along five blocks of Oak Bay Avenue, from Monterey to Mitchell Street, plus portions of Hampshire Road and Elgin Street.
A food court will be at the municipal hall parking lot. There will be free bicycle parking at two supervised bike corrals, located below the Monterey Recreation Centre, off Hampshire Road and behind Oak Bay Bikes at Foul Bay Road.
The show is free to view. The event will be open to the public 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. along Oak Bay Avenue. Car exhibitors $25, online or $30 in person the morning of the event (subject to availability). Gates opens for car exhibitors starting at 8 a.m. For more information, go to bit.ly/3S6etew.
Enjoy food and culture at Japan Fest
Meet TikTok sensation Spam Musubi, take in cultural performances, watch martial arts demonstrations, snack on sushi and do some shopping at Japan Fest at Broadmead Village Shopping Centre, Saturday, July 20.
Hosted by the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society and Fudo Japanese Restaurant, the family-friendly event features Japanese drumming by Uminari Taiko, Martial arts demonstration by Kenzen Karate, Japanese folk dancing by Furusato Dancers.
Enjoy Japanese snacks, such as Sushi, Krokke, Musubi and Kaikigori (snow cones).
The event is free to attend. It runs 3 to 5 p.m. July 20 in the courtyard in front of Fudo Restaurant, in the Broadmead Village Shopping Centre, 777 Royal Oak Dr.

Party with superheroes for a good cause
Meet up to 30 superheroes, including Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman, SpiderMan and Supergirl as Superheroes of Victoria hosts Supers Take the Field, its biggest super summer kids day at Starlight Stadium, July 20.
The event, accessible to all ages and abilities, is both to celebrate the group’s 15th anniversary and raise money for the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The day will see more than 25 tented activities, eight inflatables and seven food vendors with a variety of tasty treats.
Watch out for a full-sized wrestling ring, circus performers doing an aerial performance, stilt walkers, martial arts demonstrations as well as dance and gymnastics performances.
Try your aim at a Dunk Tank featuring MLA Ravi Parmar, City of Langford mayor and council members, City of Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey and Victoria Police Department Const. Ian Diack.
And of course, volunteers dressed as some of your favourite superheroes.
Admission by donation. The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 20 at Starlight Stadium, 1089 Langford Parkway.
