View Royal Garden Club celebrates 75 years
The popular View Royal Garden Club is celebrating 75 years of operation with an anniversary celebration Saturday afternoon.
Victoria horticulturist Jeff de Jong and Vancouver nursery owner Gary Lewis are being brought in as guest speakers for the event, which is suitable for both novice and advanced greenthumbs.
The View Royal Garden Club is a member of the BC Council of Garden Clubs and is one of the longest-running organizations of its kind on Vancouver Island. The event is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and runs until 4:30 p.m. It will be held at the Victoria Scottish Community Centre, which is located at 1803 Admirals Rd.
De Jong, a continuing education instructor at the University of Victoria, will give a presentation billed Plants That Shine, while Lewis will present The Complete Talk on Ground Covers, with selections from his book of the same name.

Get witchy at Thetis Lake paddle
Thetis Lake will host a casual paddle with a Halloween twist on Saturday afternoon.
The What’SUP WITCHES paddle is free but open to competent paddleboarders, kayakers, or canoeists only. Attendees will meet at Thetis Lake’s main beach (wearing all black and sporting witch hats, as per request). Guests are asked to arrive at 2 p.m. for the 2:30 p.m. launch. Witch hats will be available for sale, on a by-donation basis.
More than 100 people turned up for the inaugural paddle in 2022, so expect the event to be well-attended.

Arts hub open house
The Vancouver Island Visual Arts Society is having an open house at its downtown arts hub on Saturday, with no end to the artistic offerings on tap.
The building, which offers affordable gallery space and rental studios to local artists, is opening it doors at 2 p.m. for an afternoon of activity from more than 80 artists. Group exhibitions at the Ministry of Casual Living and Rockslide Gallery and a solo exhibition by Derk Wolmuth at The Vault Gallery top the bill, but there is plenty more to sample, from including live music, interactive art by Monkey C Interactive, and performance art by Open Actions.
VIVAS is located at 780 Blanshard St. The event runs Saturday 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. Admission is by donation.
