Chart-toppers from the ’80s and ’90s are coming to the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre next year for a dance-pop throwback.
Members of Milli Vanilli, 2 Unlimited, Haddaway, Snap!, and Technotronic — some of whom were not in the original line-ups — will perform as part of the 90s Dance Mix Tour, which is set for Jan. 19 at the Blanshard Street arena. Information about the exact participants is not clear at this point, but the event will be hosted by Rick (The Temp) Campanelli, formerly of Much Music, and will include a video dance party by Calgary’s DJ Kav.
Milli Vanilli is currently fronted by twins Jodie and Linda Rocco, who were back-up singers with the original line-up. Performances by the twins often include“featured visual performances” by Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, the public frontmen for the group. It appears back-up singer Daisy Dee will perform at this show as Technotronic, while German Eurodance group Snap! will be fronted by Turbo B, who lent his raps to hit singles Ooops Up and The Power.
Belgian-Dutch dance music act 2 Unlimited will feature original rapper Ray Slijngaard and singer Michèle Karamat Ali, who joined in 2022. Haddaway, led by singer Nestor Alexander Haddaway, is the only group on the bill led by its founder. The Trinidadian-born German singer topped the charts in 13 countries in 1993 with his smash hit, What Is Love. The song was later made famous by a Saturday Night Live skit, which moprhed into the film A Night at the Roxbury.
Tickets to the event go on sale Friday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. through the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre box office (250-220-7777) or sofmc.com.
