A Broadmead bedding and home-decor company is designating half the profits from the sale of a line of towels in September to the Times Colonist Literacy Society.
In 2015, to celebrate its 20th year in business, Heirloom Linens came up with the idea of a “12 Months of Giving” campaign, where it donates to a different charity every month.
“The idea was to give back to the community who supported us for 20 years,” said Kristen Stannix, chief operating officer of Heirloom Linens.
“It became so popular and successful that we have continued the program to this day.”
To date, the company, located in the Broadmead Village Shopping Centre, has donated more than $120,000 to about 48 local charities.
In September, the store will donate 50 per cent of net profits from the sale of Portofino Towels, from Portugal, to the Times Colonist Literacy Society.
“We purposely pick the smaller charities, the ones that are often forgotten,” said Stannix.
“Regardless of the success of the sale, the campaign is also meant to bring awareness of the charity. We are all over the map, supporting causes ranging from men, women, children, pets — and literacy this month.”
The literacy society, which supports school libraries and literacy programs on Vancouver Island, is typically supported by the Times Colonist’s annual book drive and sale, but the annual event has been sidelined by the pandemic.
Instead, the Times Colonist collected thousands of books that were sold to Russell Books or distributed to free little libraries, and has launched a public appeal for funds.
“Our literacy work helps the entire community, and it depends on the support of individuals as well as companies such as Heirloom Linens. We appreciate their support,” said Dave Obee, editor and publisher of the Times Colonist.
Charities supported by Heirloom Linens are guaranteed at least $500. Last month’s yard sale for Victoria Hospice raised $6,600.
