Toronto dance archivist and historian Amy Bowring is hosting two free events at the Nellie McClung library branch: a talk Friday on the history of dance in Victoria and a workshop Saturday on archiving.

Dance Salon - A History of Dance in Victoria runs 7 to 8: 30 p.m. Friday at the library.

Grassroots Archiving, which runs 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, will provide guidance on choosing which material to keep, how to store, organize and inventory material, and the storage supplies needed. Participants are invited to bring an item or small collection for Bowring to consider.

Bowring has been asked by Dance Victoria to help establish the region's first dance archive, cataloguing a large amount of recently donated historical material, including house programs, newspaper articles and photographs.

The history of dance in Victoria stretches back to the turn of the century.

Many dancers who received training in Victoria in those early years went on to successful international careers.

The library branch is located at 3950 Cedar Hill Rd. Register for the talk or workshop at [email protected] or 250-595-1829.
