In a fundraiser similar to the Christmas tree-chipping offered by service clubs, a synagogue is offering to shred old documents.
On Sunday at Mayfair Shopping Centre, synagogue members will team with Island Document Storage and Shredding to offer a one-day shredding service to raise money for Congregation Emanu-El.
The registered national heritage building at 1461 Blanshard St. celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, making it the oldest synagogue in Canada in continuous use. Members are raising money for building repairs.
Donations are coming in but the synagogue also needs to fund its operation as a spiritual and community home for about 200 families in Greater Victoria.
To help out and shred any no-longer-needed documents, bring your files and papers to the Mayfair mall parking lot (corner of Blanshard and Finlayson) on Sunday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Cost is $10 for a standard banker’s box, or 50 cents a pound.
