Step back in history: Take a dip in the Gorge

A century ago, swimming in the Gorge Waterway was a natural way to spend a hot summer day.

The Gorge was the site of Victoria's first swimming school, and swimming races and high-diving competitions were frequent events.

"The Gorge was really a hub of social and recreational activity at the turn of the last century. Unfortunately, over the years, the Gorge was not treated well and was considered polluted," says Jack Meredith, organizer of Sunday's Gorge Swim Fest.

The event, which takes place at three locations, is meant to remind locals that some of the best, and warmest, swimming in the area is right in their own backyard.

It's a testament to the efforts of many community groups and individuals that have come together over the years to clean up the local waterway's shoreline and seabed.

"Through the heroic efforts of many organizations, the Gorge has been cleaned up and now Vancouver Island Health Authority water quality tests show excellent results," Meredith says.

Restoration work began in 1994 and the waterway was given a clean bill of health in 2000.

Meredith says the swim fest is a way for the public to reconnect with the recreational roots of the important waterway.

The event is free and runs from noon to 4 p.m. at:

- Esquimalt Gorge Park (formerly Kinsmen Gorge Park), 1070 Tillicum Rd.

- Saanich's Gorge Park (Gorge Road near Tillicum Road)

- Banfield Park, at the foot of Styles Street off Craigflower Road

Each location is hosting activities including contests and games, with food and music. Those who swim at any site will be eligible to win prizes. There will also be a vintage swimwear contest at Banfield Park. For more information, go to gorgewaterway.ca/gorgeswimfest.
