Port Alberni RCMP seized about 265 marijuana plants and a shotgun from a home on Friday.
A marijuana grow-op was found at a residence in the 3700 block of 14th Avenue of Port Alberni, according to RCMP.
A 41-year-old Port Alberni man and a 29-year-old Royston woman were taken into custody and released with conditions.
Police said charges of production of marijuana, and possession for the purposes of trafficking are being recommended. Charges of possession of a weapon contrary to a court order are also being recommended against the man.
The search and seizure was part of an increased focus over the past six months to reduce criminal drug activity in the area, police said.
“The presence of a grow-operation significantly increases the threat of violence to the neighbourhood,” said Port Alberni RCMP Cpl. Jen Allan in a statement.
“History tells us that the occupants of a marijuana grow-operation are more susceptible to extortion and home invasion. These operations are targeted by criminals who commit home invasions to steal the crop — grow rips — which puts all residents in the immediate area at risk.”
