British Columbia recorded 375 more cases of COVID-19 Wednesday as vaccination numbers rise, including among children.

Island Health recorded 76 new cases and three of the province’s seven new deaths.

The province’s Health Ministry says 84.8 per cent of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 81.7 per cent have had their second shot.

For those 12 and older, 91.2 per cent have received their first dose, and 87.9 per cent have received a second. Nine per cent have received a third dose.

The new cases bring the total number of active cases to 2,936.

The province says those who are not fully vaccinated continue to account for more than half of B.C.’s cases and 68 per cent of hospitalizations.

B.C. announced Tuesday that it had identified its first case of the Omicron variant, and was awaiting test results for more than 200 others who had returned from southern African countries where the variant is spreading.
