A suspect has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that killed a teenage girl who was walking along the highway just north of Duncan in April.
North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP acting officer-in-charge Staff Sgt. Ken Beard confirmed that an arrest had been made, as part of a police quarterly update to North Cowichan council.
“We’re putting a disclosure together and additional charges are forthcoming to the suspect,” he said.
No further details were provided.
Leeann Joe, 17, was killed walking along the Trans-Canada Highway between Sherman and Green roads about 9:50 p.m. on April 18.
Emergency crews found her dead at the scene.
Later that month, police recovered a vehicle believed to be connected to the hit and run after saying they were looking for a grey 2011-13 model Hyundai Elantra with damage on the front driver’s side.
Joe, who would have turned 18 in May, has six brothers and three sisters.
Her family had previously issued a plea for the driver who struck her to come forward, as did Cowichan Tribes Chief Cindy Daniels.
