Strong tides early Wednesday caused a barge laden with wood chips to tip and drop part of its load into the water between Salt Spring and Pender islands.
Canadian Coast Guard spokeswoman Michelle Imbeau said the incident occurred about 1:30 a.m. near Turn Point.
She said the barge was being pulled by a Seaspan tugboat.
The lack of hydrocarbons, contained in oil and other substances, eased coast guard concerns about the spill.
“The coast guard’s been made aware of the incident but isn’t taking any action,” Imbeau said.
