B.C. Ferries has cancelled a number of sailings Friday and Sunday because of staff shortages.

Today’s 4 p.m. sailing departing Tsawwassen and the 6 p.m. sailing departing Swartz Bay have been scratched.

On Sunday, the 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. sailings leaving Tsawwassen and the 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. leaving Swartz Bay have also been cancelled.

All other sailings on the route are expected to travel as scheduled.

B.C. Ferries noted in a statement that it requires a specific number of crew members on board the vessel to ensure safety in the event of an emergency and to comply with Transport Canada regulations.

“The decision to cancel a sailing in these circumstances is made when we have exhausted all options to find replacement crew … if circumstances change and replacement crew become available, we would notify customers immediately,” the statement said.

B.C. Ferries said it will contact customers with bookings on the cancelled sailings, try to reschedule on another sailing or refund fees and/or fares.
