B.C. Ferries has cancelled sailings as a result of bad weather.
According to the corporation, the Spirit of British Columbia cancelled its 11 a.m. Tuesday sailing from Tsawwassen and the 1 p.m. sailing from Swartz Bay due to high winds.
“The safety of our passengers and crew is of primary importance to us. We don’t take the decision to cancel sailings lightly, as we know customers rely on us to get to their destinations. We will resume service as soon as it is safe to do so,” a statement on the B.C. Ferries website said.
Other sailings around the fleet were delayed until it was deemed safe to travel.
Heavy winds also led to cancellation of several northern Gulf Islands sailings on Tuesday.
“Right now, we’ve suspended the Powell River-Comox run, Powell River-Texada and Quadra to Cortes,” said spokeswoman Deborah Marshall.
The northern route between Haida Gwaii and Prince Rupert was delayed Monday evening and was operating on a modified schedule for the next 24 hours.
A wind warning has been issued for much of the south coast today as a Pacific frontal system was bringing southeasterly winds of 60 to 80 km/h to most inner coastal regions.
In the wake of the front, strong westerly winds up to 70 km/h are expected to develop over Greater Victoria near Juan de Fuca Strait this evening. The winds are expected to ease Wednesday morning.
