It’s going to cost a little more to ride the ferry, as higher fuel costs translate into higher fares.
As of Nov. 1, rates are increasing by 1.5 per cent, B.C. Ferries announced Monday.
That means it will cost an extra 70 cents for an adult on sailings between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. A vehicle and driver will cost $3.15 more.
On smaller inter-island routes, rates will increase by about 40 cents for an adult, and $1.70 for a vehicle and driver.
The corporation has been adjusting ferry rates depending on fuel prices for the past 18 years, with fares rising and falling depending on international fuel prices.
B.C. Ferries has been developing ways to reduce fuel use throughout its fleet. This includes bringing in ships able to run on battery power, though the charging infrastructure — still to be funded — is not yet installed.
